Abstract Home automation is one of the most exciting developments in technology for home that has come along in decades. A home area network could control many devices, all of them working together to keep the home comfortable, entertaining and safe. The intelligent automated home (Smart Home) of the future, often glamorized in sci-fi movies, is now available. This paper will introduce a Home Automation Development Platform that has been built at the Department of Automation and Industrial Informatics, University “Politehnica” of Timisoara, and it presents the design and architecture of the hardware devices and software components, which communicate through a well-defined protocols.
